Get to Know Raleigh

Raleigh in the capital city of North Carolina and was officially named after the English explorer Sir Walter Raleigh who attempted to establish the first English colony on the shores of the new world in the 1580s.

Born in 1552 to a Protestant family, he grew up in the house of Hayes Barton in South Devon in the United Kingdom. He became a favorite of Queen Elizabeth I because of his efforts at increasing the Protestant Church in Ireland. In 1585, Raleigh was knighted. He was an English aristocrat, writer, poet, soldier, courtier, spy, and explorer. He is also well known for popularizing tobacco in England. This is perhaps why Raleigh and the surrounding cities became a source for growing and producing tobacco.  Check out the history behind The American Tobacco Trail.

Today, Raleigh has an exceptionally diverse scene in both Arts and Food. There are several bear gardens in the downtown area and plenty of things to do and sites to see.
