Apex was incorporated as a town in the 1860s. It was named Apex because it is the highest point on the Chatham Railroad, running from Richmond, Virginia, to Jacksonville, Florida. Apex Union Depot, which presently houses the Apex Chamber of Commerce, was originally a station for the Seaboard Air Line Railroad. Later on, it also served as the Apex Community Library.
 
The downtown area of the city is centered around charming Salem Street and is recognized by the National Register of Historic Places.
