On Saturday, Dec. 5, Downtown Cary Park runs its Tree Lighting Celebration from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. The same day brings a farmers market, a vendor market, Santa photos and Victorian Christmas at the Page-Walker. Academy Street is closed from Park Street to Dry Avenue from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. One Saturday later, the Cary Jaycees Christmas Parade closes much of the same grid again.
Most of the season happens outside those two Saturdays. Fenton's rink is cheapest on Mondays, and the NC Chinese Lantern Festival saves its discounts for Sunday through Thursday. Downtown's quieter events, including the menorah lighting and sensory-friendly Santa photos, land on a Monday and a Tuesday. The schedule rewards anyone who can go out on a weeknight.
Dec. 5 Puts a Whole Day of Downtown Cary on One Block
The Tree Lighting is free and open to all ages. Here is how Downtown Cary Park has laid out the day:
- 9 a.m. to noon: Cary Farmers Holiday Market on East Park Street
- 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.: Photos with Santa at The Gathering House
- Noon to 8 p.m.: Holiday Vendor Market along S. Academy Street
- 2 to 6 p.m.: Reindeer Games at Park Street Arena, plus a snowball fight area and face painting at The Nest Pavilion
- 3 to 5:15 p.m.: Community performances at the Great Lawn Pavilion
- 6 p.m.: Cary's official Tree Lighting Ceremony on Frantz Square Lawn
The Town has more on that same afternoon. Victorian Christmas runs from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Page-Walker Arts & History Center, the 1870s hotel the Town decorates with carolers in Dickensian costume, plus cookies, cider and a kids' craft. The Gingerbread Competition and the Gifting Tree Project both open downtown on Dec. 5 too.
Those last two keep going after the tree is lit. Gingerbread runs through Dec. 13 and the Gifting Tree through Dec. 20. If you can't stand crowds, you can skip the big Saturday and still see both on a slow Tuesday.
The Next Saturday Closes Even More Streets
The Cary Jaycees Christmas Parade runs Saturday, Dec. 12, from 2 to 4 p.m. It starts on E. Chatham Street at Ward Street, follows E. Chatham to S. Academy, and ends on Dry Avenue in front of the Cary Arts Center.
The road closures cover more ground than the Tree Lighting did. According to the Jaycees' parade FAQ, these streets close from 1 to 4 p.m.:
- E. Chatham, from S. Academy to the traffic circle by Urban Park
- S. Academy, from E. Chatham to Dry Avenue
- East and West Circle Drive
- E. Cedar, from N. Walker to Ward
- Ward and Hunter
- Dry Avenue, from S. Harrison to S. Academy
The Jaycees don't offer designated parade parking. They point visitors to Town public parking and ask that no one park on E. Chatham or S. Academy along the route. The Town also lists a Grinch Candy Cane Hunt that day. So for two Saturdays in a row, the center of downtown is built around closed streets.
The Season, Day by Day
Here are the season's main dated events from the Town, Downtown Cary Park, Fenton and Koka Booth Amphitheatre. The big crowds gather on Saturdays. The smaller, more specialized events fill the weeknights.

The Lantern Festival Charges Less for a Quieter Night
The NC Chinese Lantern Festival returns to Koka Booth Amphitheatre at 8003 Regency Parkway for its eleventh year. It runs Nov. 21, 2026, through Jan. 10, 2027, open daily from 6 to 10 p.m. and closed Christmas Day.
The ticket rules favor weeknights in several ways:
- Evening Session discounts for military, seniors 55 and up, and college students apply only Sunday through Thursday nights, never on Fridays, Saturdays or holidays.
- Group discounts for 20 or more people also run Sunday through Thursday. They black out from Dec. 14 through Jan. 3.
- Prices go up if you buy on the day you attend.
- Twilight Session tickets let you in at 4:30 p.m. for golden-hour light and lighter crowds. No discounts apply to them.
For opening night, Nov. 21, Etix lists advance Evening Session prices of $30.90 for ages 13 and up and $22.40 for ages 3 to 12, before tax, plus a $3 order fee. An Any Night ticket costs $41.46 before tax. That's about $10 more than the opening-night adult price, and it buys you flexibility. Kids 2 and under get in free.
The Sensory-Friendly Night is Tuesday, Dec. 1, with lower music volume, smaller crowds, no strobe or flashing lights, and a designated Quiet Area. Koka Booth has about 1,500 free parking spaces in lots it owns. Preferred parking costs $10 in advance or $15 the night of, and some nearby businesses charge for their lots. The venue is cashless and tickets are mobile only.
Fenton's Rink Has a Different Deal Each Weeknight
Skate the Square opens at Fenton Square by Paragon Theaters, 21 Fenton Main Street, on Nov. 6 and runs through Feb. 7, 2027. A standard ticket is $18 plus tax and fees, and a season pass is $90. Each session gives you 75 minutes on the ice, starting when you check in.
The discounts fall on set days of the week:
- Monday is Cheapskate Day, with tickets at $15 plus tax.
- Tuesday is Blades & Badges, $15 for veterans, military, police, firefighters, EMS, doctors and nurses, bought in person with a valid ID.
- Sunday through Thursday, students pay $15 plus tax, also in person with an ID.
- Thursdays in December bring the three DJ nights.
Skaters have to be at least 3, and anyone under 12 needs an adult with them. Rental skates come with admission, and toddler skate aids rent for $6 per 30 minutes. People who aren't skating can't go into the rink area, but there's seating around the square. Also on Fenton Main Street, Sweet Paris Crêperie & Café sits at 1 Fenton Main Street, Suite 190. Western Wake reported in early September that it had quietly opened, and it serves from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. every day.
Downtown Dinner on a Weeknight Takes a Little Planning
Two of downtown Cary's newer restaurants sit on E. Chatham Street, a short walk from the park, but they keep different schedules. WRAL reported in late August that Lloyd's Full Service was open in a restored service station at 107 E. Chatham St. The News & Observer traces the building to the station K.M. Lloyd opened in 1951. Lloyd's serves dinner Wednesday through Friday and both lunch and dinner on Saturday and Sunday. Its online ordering page shows it opening Wednesday at 4 p.m.
That means a dinner at Lloyd's fits a Thursday, Dec. 17, trip to Marvelous Music Family. For the Monday Menorah Lighting or Tuesday Santa photos, try K38 Baja Grill on E. Chatham Street. It's open 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and until 10 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.
If You Do Go on a Saturday, Park in a Deck
The Town lists four free public parking decks downtown:
- Cedar Street Deck, 136 E. Cedar St.
- Walnut Street Deck, 113 Walnut St.
- Town Hall Deck, 121 Wilkinson Ave.
- Academy Street Deck, 206 S. Academy St.
The Downtown Cary Park parking page also lists the public deck behind Cary Regional Library, the Charlie Gaddy Lane lot and marked street spaces. It suggests free GoCary service and has a rideshare drop-off on S. Walker Street. Plan your route around the closures. On Dec. 5, Academy Street is closed from Park Street to Dry Avenue from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., and on Dec. 12, the parade closures, including part of E. Cedar, run from 1 to 4 p.m.
If friends or family are visiting this December and thinking about Cary, take them to a Monday skate or a weeknight at the Lantern Festival, and then call me.
