University Place Chapel Hill: A Fresh Take on Shopping, Dining & Community
If you've spent time in Chapel Hill, chances are you've visited University Place. Whether it's picking up groceries, meeting friends for dinner, or catching a movie, this longtime shopping destination has been part of the community for years.
But if you haven't visited recently, you may be pleasantly surprised by what's changing!
University Place is becoming more than a place to run errands. With inviting outdoor spaces, new restaurants and retailers, and the introduction of the UPSocial entertainment district, it's creating new opportunities for neighbors and friends to gather, relax, and enjoy everything Chapel Hill has to offer.
And as someone who loves helping people discover what makes our Triangle communities special, I think that's worth sharing!
A New Outdoor Gathering Space in the Heart of Chapel Hill
Located at 201 S. Estes Drive, University Place has been undergoing a significant transformation from its former identity as University Mall.
The larger redevelopment plans include retail, office space, residential living, and public green space. Although the next construction phase has been delayed, the property has found a creative way to make use of the available land.
Instead of leaving the space behind construction fencing, University Place has opened it as an outdoor gathering area known as The Commons.
Plans for the space include picnic tables, shaded seating, and lawn games such as cornhole, bocce, and horseshoes. Live music and outdoor movie events are also part of the property's community programming.
It's a wonderful example of how an existing destination can evolve to offer something new for the people who live nearby.
Meet UPSocial: A New Way to Enjoy University Place
One of the newest additions is UPSocial, an outdoor entertainment district that officially launched on September 16, 2026.
The concept is simple. Adults 21 and older can purchase an alcoholic beverage from a participating restaurant and enjoy it while exploring designated outdoor areas of University Place.
Participating establishments include:
- Stoney River Steakhouse
- Silverspot Cinema's bar
- bartaco
- Hawkers
The district includes portions of the property's restaurant corridor, The Commons, and the Pop UP Park.
UPSocial operates under a special North Carolina ABC permit, and there are some important guidelines. Beverages must be purchased from participating establishments, carried in approved cups, and consumed within the posted district boundaries.
Not every neighboring business allows outside beverages, so visitors should look for posted window signs before entering.
The district's posted operating hours are 10 a.m. to 11 p.m., although individual restaurant hours vary.
For the latest information, I recommend reviewing the official University Place UPSocial guidelines before visiting.
What I especially like about this concept is that it encourages people to spend time outdoors, connect with friends, and enjoy the surrounding businesses in a relaxed setting.
New Shopping and Dining Options Worth Exploring
University Place continues to welcome new businesses, adding even more reasons to spend an afternoon or evening in Chapel Hill.
One exciting addition is Barnes & Noble, which opened in September 2026 in the former Planet Fitness space. With reported daily hours extending until 10 p.m., it's a convenient stop after dinner or a movie.
Other recent additions include H&H Bagels, VEG Emergency Vet, and SWTHZ, a wellness studio.
And there's more on the horizon!
HomeSense, a home furnishings and decor retailer, is planning a location at University Place with a targeted spring 2027 opening. Postino, a restaurant and wine bar, and another Bliss Nail Spa location have also been announced.
These additions create an appealing mix of shopping, dining, wellness, and entertainment, all in one convenient location.
Whether you're planning a casual lunch, browsing for home decor, or enjoying a night out, University Place is giving visitors more options to choose from.

Why Community Spaces Like This Matter
One of the things I love most about living and working in the Triangle is that each of our communities has its own personality.
Chapel Hill is known for its university atmosphere, established neighborhoods, cultural attractions, and local businesses. Places like University Place contribute to that character by creating destinations where people can gather and enjoy time together.
When I'm helping buyers explore a new area, our conversations often go beyond the number of bedrooms or the size of a backyard.
We talk about lifestyle.
Where will you meet friends for dinner? What can you do on a Saturday afternoon? Are there shops, restaurants, parks, and community events nearby?
Those everyday experiences are an important part of finding a place that truly feels like home.
University Place's transformation is another example of how Chapel Hill continues to evolve while maintaining the welcoming community atmosphere that makes it special.
